Artisan & Craft Support

A Craft Lives in a Pair of Hands

Weaving, metalwork, stone carving, natural dyeing, instrument making — each is a body of knowledge that exists only while it is practised. When an artisan can no longer earn from the work, the knowledge does not go into storage. It stops.

What This Work Involves

  • Sustainable livelihoods — work that pays enough to be worth continuing, on terms the artisan agrees to.
  • Materials and markets — help with access to raw material, and with reaching buyers directly.
  • Transmission — apprenticeship and teaching, so that a skill has somewhere to go after its present holder.
  • Documentation — recording technique and process alongside the practice, never instead of it.

More in Heritage Preservation

Restoration, archiving and craft support are one effort. Each depends on the other two.
